MOG is a social networking site where computer users who listen to their music primarily on their computers or iPods can set up personal pages with their musical interests and listening history. There are tools for connecting with other similar users. MOG is similar to Last.fm, but it first uploads a listing of a user's digital music collection to their MOG page, then it keeps track of what music is played on the user's computer. Other features include music-focused blogging, dedicated pages for artists, albums and songs, tagging of music items, and direct links to iTunes and Amazon for music purchases. The site distributes a small application called MOG-O-MATIC that continuously updates the user's MOG site with the music currently playing on their computer or listened to on an iPod and any music added to the user's digital collection. MOG was started by David Hyman, former CEO of Gracenote, former SVP-Marketing at MTV Interactive, co-founder of Addicted to Noise. MOG is built on Web 2.0 technologies, including Ajax and Ruby on Rails, and powered by Gracenote Music ID technology. MOG is a privately-held company headquartered in Berkeley, CA. It has raised capital from a variety of sources, including $2.8 million in A Round funding in April, 2008 from two of the four major labels Universal Music Group and Sony BMG along with The Angels' Group. Since its launch on June 20, 2006, MOG has been featured in BoingBoing, Coolhunting, MTV.com, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Blender, Reuters, Spin.com, and many other media outlets and blogs. In late 2008, concerns were raised about MOG's future, in particular its financial status. Reports that affiliate payments were being pushed back sparked rumors of money troubles. This came after several months of user complaints about site performance and bugs in the MOG-O-MATIC application that frequently resulted in system crashes. However, in April 2009, MOG relaunched its homepage with an increased focus on music news and a curated selection of user-generated blog posts about music. Raising $12.5 million in funding to date, including strategic investments from venture capital firms Menlo Ventures, Simon Equity, Universal Music Group and Sony Music, MOG launched the new ‘’’MOG All Access’’’ online subscription-based digital music service in North America. The service costs five dollars per month and is backed by all four major music labels: the Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, the Warner Music Group and EMI Music, plus thousands of independent labels through the digital distributors Orchard, IODA and Beggars Group. The service is similar to Pandora, the free online radio site, and music subscription services like Rhapsody. Users can listen to the songs of any artist and build a playlist with the music. By manipulating a slide bar, users can also gradually add a smattering of tunes by similar artists, in effect customizing their own online radio station. Users can then share these playlists from their site on the MOG service. Tracks stream at a high-quality 256Kbps in this browser-based service, which has plans to launch a mobile music component by as early as the end of 2009. A Complete Music Experience MOG All Access is a natural extension of The MOG Music Network, the largest network of music blogs on the web. In addition to having access to millions of songs, All Access subscribers will be able to learn more about the music they're listening to by easily connecting to all sorts of content from news and reviews to playlists and lyrics.
