Bad Backlinks?

Hello,

What exactly are "bad backlinks"? and why does Google penalize a site for having these "bad backlinks"?

Surely it should not be my problem if a bad website has links to my site?

Bad backlinks are nothing but spammy websites, there are many such websites in the market. These websites are present for number of reasons, when you get a backlink from these websites it will be harmful for your site. Ex : some spammy only bring traffic and bounce rate will be very high which are not needed and some sites redirect their url to your websites. These spammy sites or badbacklinks are very harmful, just avoid it or in case if you are getting backlinks from those, then remove it by disavow tool.

Bad or spam backlinks should be avoided for ranking your website in search engines. Usually spam backlinks bring unwanted traffic to your website which increases the bounce rate of your website.

One of the reason for bad backlinks is the Spammy comments and forum profiles. Everyone hates spammers and Google is certainly no exception. Comments or forum posts that are written only for the purpose of placing a link will get your website penalized.
